Film noir is French expression for “black film”. It is a film term which characterizes a certain cinematic period that took place from the early 1940s and lasted something about to the late 1950s. This period in movie industry reflects the pessimism and cynical attitudes of American society during the WWII and early years of the Cold War. As a rule it was a period of stylish Hollywood crime dramas, which contained a criminal plot, gloomy atmosphere of cynical fatalism and pessimism, elimination of the edge between a hero and antihero, relative realism of action and dark illumination of the scene, usually night. Later on, film noir was incarnated in the films of various well-known directors and a fashion for noir films periodically came back to life.
