Cutting Down on Mental Clutter

One of the most challenging parts of being a small business or ecommerce owner is having to make decisions. Mental clutter easily gets in the way. It keeps you from focusing, and it keeps you from making progress. Learning how to eliminate it or at least cut it down is essential to making strong business decisions.

What is Mental Clutter?

Mental clutter is anything that clouds your thought. According to the book “Decisive, How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work,” it is a combination of distraction, over confidence, worries, dreams, and fears. In other words, it’s everything that gets into your mind and gets you off focused. It is not necessarily a bad thing. But it is something that will get in the way of clear decision making.

What are the Primary Causes of Mental Clutter?

The primary causes of mental clutter are worries, media, and aspirations. When you’re working in the ecommerce business, you will be constantly surrounded by technology and media. In fact, you’re probably going to have to be heavily involved in social media, an arena filled with all kinds of distractions. Worry and aspirations, on the other hand, are just a part of normal living. According to, most ecommerce and other small business owners tend to be more inclined to dream big and worry big. It’s one of the side effects of striking out and starting up your own business.

How Do You Eliminate or Cut Down Mental Clutter?

Social media, television, movies, and the news are common sources of controllable mental clutter. While you may feel as if you are working better with the television on, you are actually distracting yourself. In some cases, this isn’t a problem. However, if you find that you can’t focus or you are getting agitated, then the mental clutter is generally becoming too much. Turn the television off. Mute the radio. Get back to work and focus just on that.

When it comes to worries though, it is not so easy as pressing a button. Often times, the worries are real. You are struggling with focusing because something very real and very bad might be about to happen. You can handle this in a couple of different ways. One of the ways is to set it mentally aside. Promise yourself that you will come back to it if there is nothing you can do about it now. If that does not work, then try meditation or a brisk walk. Remember that if you cannot do anything about it at the moment, then you should not waste time worrying about it.

Aspirations, on the other hand, are the most pleasant to deal with but also some of the most challenging. These generally come from those feelings and sensations as your hopes and dreams begin to build. You see your ecommerce business growing into something grand. The best solution here is to pull yourself down out of the clouds. Promise to let yourself have time later to enjoy the daydreams, but focus now on getting the work done.
