Top 7 tips to promote yourself online as a freelancer

As a freelancer, promoting yourself so that you gain clients and build up a loyal client base is essential. The web is a brilliant thing for exactly that, as it allows small businesses to compete with much larger businesses on the same scale. That’s why it’s important as a freelancer that you promote yourself effectively using every avenue and platform that you can. To give you a few ideas, here are our top 7 tips to promote yourself online:

Build a Website

The first tip to promoting yourself online as a freelancer is to build a website. It needs to be good enough to draw in customers and keep them though, not just a quick slap dash job. Hiring a professional web designer/developer with a good knowledge of SEO is a good investment.

Use Real Testimonials

Once you have a website, you’ll be able to ask for existing customers to write testimonials on your site for visitors to browse through. Not only will these make your brand appear more credible, your visitors will automatically put trust in your products. Ask your customers to include how your service/product benefited them, and what the best thing about it is.

Obtain Facebook Likes

Likes on Facebook are becoming more and more important to people who want to market themselves and their brand, so freelancers shouldn’t be missing out on all they have to offer. Once one person has liked your page, their whole friends list will know about it via the newsfeed…which could mean more likes for you! In exchange for liking your page, offer people an incentive. The first 100 people to like could get a free handmade bracelet if you make jewellery, or you could run a competition for one person to win something bigger.

Write a Blog and Share Your Knowledge

You should always include a blog on your site, to share your expertise and knowledge. You could offer them a piece of content explaining something to them, or even create a vlog (video blog) giving your visitors a tutorial on something they could find interesting. For example, if you’re a car fanatic; why not write a blog explaining how people can stay safe on the roads in winter?

Create Videos

Videos can be very powerful indeed, especially when shared on sites like YouTube. You should get creative with this video to get your audience interested and tell them a bit more about who you are in a short period of time.

Sign Up to Freelance Sites

Freelance sites like Elance and PeoplePerHour are perfect for getting freelance work. You can make posts explaining exactly what you offer, and people who want to work with you can offer you a job, or you can search for advertised jobs and apply.

Use LinkedIn to Create a Mailing List

By using LinkedIn, you can make contact with other professional people who you would never have met otherwise – it’s like the Facebook for business folk! Build up your contact list and you’ll then be able to build a mailing list of people who could be interested in your products or services.

As a freelancer you can’t just expect somebody to knock on your door and ask you to do something for them – you have to go out there and get it!
