A Showcase of Art Deco Design Inspiration

Mathematics, modernity and glamour; the art deco movement began in Paris during the 1920s and changed the design-world forever. Drawing on diverse influences such as neoclassical, constructivism, cubism, modernism and futurism, art deco continued to expand its influence during the 1930s, dominating all areas of design, architecture, accessories and interiors. It also left a lasting mark on the world of art, film and fashion. The linear symmetry of art deco couldn’t be further from the flowing lines, curves and romanticism of its predecessor, art nouveau. Instead of florid detail and opulent swirls, art deco offered a complete diversion, with more in common with minimalist movements such as Bauhaus, both schools sharing an obsession with strong colour, restraint and the beauty of the machine. During the late 1930s and early 1940s art deco saw a decline in popularity, only to see a resurgence of interest in the 1960s, influencing later styles such as Memphis and pop art. Here we take a brief look designs that have been influenced by art deco, and the elements of the movement that exist around us today.

A Showcase of Grunge in logo design

Back in the early 1990s something happened that changed the way we see what’s cool forever. And that something was grunge. Whether you lay the honour at the feet of Kurt Cobain or believe Mark Arm, the vocalist of Mudhoney (who is believed to be the first to use the term), was the man responsible for the revolution, the significance of grunge cannot be over-estimated. From riot grrrls dressed in babydoll dresses and Doc Martins to long-haired boys in plaid shirts, the Seattle look took over United States, starting with Seattle. And the movement spread. Post Nevermind, grunge went mainstream, and its influence touched every aspect of the creative industries including fashion, film, art and design. Its hold on cool-credentials doesn’t seem to be slipping. Head over to east London today and you’ll see kids in checked shirts wearing converse on skateboards everywhere – the fact some of these ‘kids’ are now in the thirties is a topic for another discussion. Here we take a look at some creative grunge-inspired logo designs; perfect for leftfield brands with edge and a great way to inject some cool into a more corporate organisation.

Swiss Style Posters by Mike Joyce

Probably all of you have heard of International Typographic Style, also known as Swiss Style, a well known among designers graphic style which originally comes from Switzerland and was developed in 1950s. This style in design combines cleanliness, readability and what is very important today objectivity.

Today we would like to present to your attention a very inspiring project called Swissted. This project was started by graphic designer Mike Joyce, who is also the owner of Stereotype design, a graphic design studio located in New York city. Many of the examples presented below were redesigned by Mike from vintage punk, hardcore, and indie rock show flyers into International Typographic Style posters. Each design is set in Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk medium, all lowercase. Hope you will enjoy the mastery of this great designer together with the specific features of Swiss Style!
